National
Civil Rights Leader Supports DC 35 Protest.
Frank Borges, Treasurer
of the national NAACP, has joined DC 35 in rejecting the contracting
policies of Highland Hospitality Corp. Highland owns the Courtyard Tremont
hotel in Boston’s theater district, and the company hired a collection of
renovation contractors who abuse community standards. When appraised of
the situation Borges, who was on the Board of Directors of Highland, approached
company executives and attempted to persuade them to hire legitimate contractors.
When Highland refused, Brother Borges resigned as a member of the Board of
Directors.
DC 35 had also maintained
a lengthy protest during renovation.
“The fact that the national
Treasurer of the NAACP would not only take an interest, but also take
a stand in support of the District Council 35’s fight for immigrant
workers and community standards, should send a signal to other developers.
” said Business Manager Ralph Harriman.
